STARTING WITH ART - WHERE SHOULD I START? I'VE GOT ANSWERS.

By Daniela Ciobanu

Are you feeling inspired to explore your creative side, but unsure of where to begin? It can be daunting at the beginning, but that's why I've created this blog to guide you through the exciting journey of discovering your artistic talents, no matter your experience level.

Whether you've always dreamed of picking up a paintbrush or are simply curious about exploring your creative potential, the world of art is yours for the taking. From finding inspiration to mastering the fundamentals, I've got the insights to help you embark on this fulfilling adventure.

STEP 1 - Discover your Medium

Which medium excites you the most? Pause and reflect on what initially inspired you to start painting. Was it observing someone using Watercolours, Charcoal/Pencils, Oils? A new hobby perhaps? Each medium has its own charm and challenges, so it's worth experimenting with a few to see what best fits your style and emotional expression. Consider starting with something versatile, like pencil sketching or acrylic painting which requires minimal setup and investment.

For the Beginner Artist:

If you are a Beginner artist I would recommend you to start with Drawing and Watercolour.

Why? Drawing is just very fundamental skill that forms the basis of all art forms. It trains your eye to observe shapes, shadows, and perspectives, helping you develop a keen sense of composition and proportion. On the other hand, Watercolour painting, known for its fluidity and unexpected results, encourages spontaneity and allow us to stop with perfectionism, nurtures creativity, intuition, and colour experimentation in your artistic endeavors. One of my favorite mediums!

For the Intermediate Artist:

If you already have a vision of your artistic direction or a favorite medium, that's a great start.

However, it's important to continuously push yourself and improve your skills. Work on mastering the ability to depict intricate shapes and textures that add depth to your artwork. Keep experimenting with advanced techniques such as studying anatomy, understanding colour theory, exploring colour blending, and discovering effects that you could do with just a simple brush.

Maybe Introducing Oil painting in your practice? Transitioning to oils can be challenging but rewarding. You'll gain patience and deeper appreciation for layering and textural effects.

STEP 2 - Invest in Quality Art Supplies

Once you've chosen your type of medium, investing with art supplies is next. You don't need a lot - just a few good-quality essentials to get you started.

Remember, quality over quantity will make your learning process more enjoyable and your work more professional.

STEP 3 - Practice Regularly

Get a sketchbook and try to paint or draw regularly, even if it's just for a little bit every day. Being consistent really helps you get better at it. The more you practice, the better you'll get for sure! Keep at it even if it feels hard at first.

STEP 4 - Learn with Others

Engaging in art can often be a solitary pursuit, but becoming part of a community or taking art classes can offer you encouragement, motivation, and constructive criticism to enhance your skills. In my role as an art educator, I conduct courses in Drawing, Watercolour, and Oil Painting designed for various proficiency levels. Additionally, workshops are a great way to connect with fellow art lovers!

My General Advice

Hey there! Just think about what you want to achieve with your art - whether it's getting better at a technique, building up your portfolio, or just trying out a new hobby. Having clear goals can really help you stay on track in your artistic adventure.

Different art forms and skill levels need different amounts of time and setup. Take a look at your schedule and figure out how much time you can set aside for practicing.

Remember, anyone can be an artist if they're open to exploring, trying new things, and enjoying the creative process. So, why not start now? Let's go on this journey together and uncover the artist in you!
